NLSI Peace Evangelical Secondary School

 (2023 - 2024)

Letter to Parents (1)

Dear parents and students,

Greetings to all! May God's grace be with you always! We are now in the third month of the new academic year, and we are grateful that all staff and students at the school are safe and everything is running smoothly.

School updates: Steady progress, creating opportunities for students' growth and development
We would like to thank all parents for their active response to the "Seasonal Influenza Vaccination School Outreach (Free of Charge) Programme" in September. The Department of Health's vaccination team will be visiting the school on December 1st to administer vaccines to nearly 400 participating students, preventing the spread of influenza on campus and safeguarding the health of our students.

In order to help students develop positive values and a sense of lawfulness, the school has been strengthening values education in recent years. The theme of moral education for this academic year is "diligence" and "lawfulness." In addition to teachers sharing messages during morning assemblies, we have introduced "positive guidance" during two morning assembly sessions each week, where students read passages from the Bible or inspirational texts. Grade-level meetings have been moved to the afternoon, and after each meeting, there is a discussion and reflection session led by the class teachers on the respective theme. Furthermore, we have arranged sexual education lectures for students to help them understand the dynamics of relationships and address their questions and concerns regarding sexuality, especially during adolescence.

I am pleased to inform you that our students at PESS have continued to achieve excellent results in the 2023 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination. The number of students who have met the basic requirements for university degrees (33222) and associate degrees (22222) has increased compared to last year. Additionally, seven subjects have achieved a pass rate that is equal to or higher than the average level in Hong Kong, with English Language steadily improving and maintaining a high value-added level. I have seen students perform well in the public exams, and some have even been admitted to their desired universities such as the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This is truly gratifying, and I believe that as long as students continue to put in effort, they will achieve their desired outcomes!

In early October, our students participated in the Tuen Mun District Inter-school Swimming Competition, and 12 students achieved outstanding results in multiple events. The medalists include Suen Lee Nam Athena and Law Chung Hei from Form 1, Lee Tong Lok and Sin Tsz Ue from Form 3, Tsang Tsoi I and the gold medalist Cheung Hoi Yan Holly from Form 4, as well as the gold medalist Yeung Yat from Form 6. Our students also won a bronze medal in the Boys' Division 4x50m Freestyle Relay. Due to the remarkable performance of all team members, we achieved the sixth place in the Girls' Division, seventh place in the Boys' Division, and eighth place in the overall team rankings for the Boys' Division. Furthermore, in the first "Rising Stars Autumn Youth Athletics Championships," Form 2C student Zhou Qiaoxuan won third place in the Girls' Division 800m race. Congratulations on this achievement!

In other public competitions, the following students have brought honor to both Hong Kong and our school and deserve commendation. Form 2 student Cheung Tsz Hin recently represented Hong Kong in the "World Youth Jump Rope Championships" and won third place in the 12-15 Boys' Team Freestyle event. Form 6 student Leung Ka Ho participated in the 2023 "Greater Bay Area Boxing Invitation Tournament" organized by the Hong Kong Boxing Association and won the championship in the Youth Boys' 57kg Boxing category. Additionally, in July, the Design and Technology department sent 11 teams of students to participate in the MTR "Metaverse Future Station Facilities Design Competition," with three teams successfully advancing to the top 50. Two teams composed of Form 4D students Chan Tsz Yiu, Lau Pui Kwan, and Xiao Ho Hin attended the award ceremony on October 20th and were interviewed by the Sing Tao Daily to share their creative ideas. Form 4D student Lam Cheuk Kiu won a silver award in the "Asia Pacific Cup International Mathematics Invitational." Congratulations to all the students on their achievements!

Teacher Professional Development:
In mid-October, we were delighted to receive a notification from the Hong Kong Association of Secondary School Principals regarding our school's outstanding performance in their "Self-directed Learning Teacher Commendation Scheme" for Chinese Language, English Language, and Mathematics. We highly appreciate the dedication of our teachers in creating a classroom environment that promotes students' self-directed learning.

25th Anniversary Celebration: "Exploring and Soaring"
Time flies, and PESS, founded in 1999, has reached its 25th anniversary. As we approach this silver jubilee celebration, we are filled with gratitude and enthusiasm, preparing various activities to commemorate this milestone. The theme of our 25th anniversary celebration is "Exploring and Soaring," which represents the ideals and vision of PESS.

"Exploring" signifies the years of dedication from our teaching team in researching effective teaching and nurturing strategies. In terms of curriculum, our school has developed innovative courses such as Creative Media, Chinese Medicine and Digital Branding Communication, interdisciplinary English courses, and technology activities. Through classroom research, lesson preparation, observation, and discussion among all teachers, our school effectively facilitates students' mobile learning, self-study, collaborative learning, peer learning, and metacognitive development. In terms of character education, we not only provide students with spiritual nurturing and diverse extracurricular activities but have also actively strengthened values education in recent years, fostering a caring and disciplined campus atmosphere. We firmly believe that through the mutual refinement of teaching and learning between teachers and students, our gifts and talents can be fully realized.

"Soaring" is derived from Isaiah 40:31 in the Bible: "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Like the transformed and ready-to-launch eagle in the scripture, our school and students, after a period filled with numerous challenges, humbly look to the Lord for wisdom and strength. He provides us with new grace and vitality, renewing our tired and weak lives, multiplying His favor and empowering us. May the Lord lead PESS to spread its wings like an eagle, courageously moving forward, running without fatigue, soaring effortlessly, continuously reaching new heights, and faithfully fulfilling the mission God has given us.

Following the September "Silver Jubilee Launch Ceremony," various celebratory activities will be held over the next two academic years. I sincerely invite all parents to participate in the "Silver Jubilee Fun Run and Fundraising Event" on Saturday, December 9th. This event aims to raise funds to enhance the environment of the school's ground floor lobby, purchase equipment and software for the Physical Education department, and provide students with a better learning environment to explore their interests and potential. Additionally, the funds raised will be used to create a commemorative leisure uniform for all students attending the anniversary year. In addition to the approximately 1500-meter course for all students, we have also set up an open category, welcoming parents to join. The fundraising target for this event is HKD 150,000, and we hope that all parents can support us wholeheartedly, contributing to the development of the school and students.

Regular school work and activities have resumed in full swing. We would like to draw your attention to the following events and dates: November 8th is the school trip day, and November 21st to 24th is Gospel Week. Finally, November 25th and December 1st are PESS Information Days, and we welcome all parents to recommend students in the district who are currently in Primary 5 and 6 to visit our school with their family and friends.

Lastly, may God bless all parents with smoothness in all endeavors, and may students make progress in character and academics throughout this school year, finding favor in the eyes of God and people!
